Party Poker appear to have really cornered the televised poker market. No sooner do two of their shows finish their current series than another two jump right into their time slots. Late Night Poker and the Poker Den have finished for the series, but this week has been replaced by the Premier League 2 and European Open IV.

In a classic example of changing a law by not enforcing the law, the government of Sweden has ended it monopoly on online gaming by advising all state prosecutors to halt cases against media organizations accepting ads from foreign online gambling companies, which means that many online poker operators may now decide to begin advertising in Sweden, competing openly with state-supoprted Svenska Spel. And if you can advertise, then apparently you may also operate and accept customers.

Harrah’s Entertainment has officially announced the dates and sites for the second annual World Series of Poker Europe Presented by Betfair. The 2008 edition of Europe’s WSOP outpost will again be held at the same three London Clubs International casinos that hosted the inaugural event last year — St. James (Fifty), Leicester Square (The Casino at the Empire) and Marble Arch (Sportsman). The 2008 WSOPE will run from September 19th to October 1st, 2008, with the specific dates for the events still being worked on at this time.

The European Commission, the legal arm of the European Union, announced on Monday the launching of a probe into United States rules preventing European gambling companies from offering their services to American customers. The probe targets the United States’ 2006 passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which forced many European gambling companies to withdraw their services from America.

The UK has come up trumps over the rest of Europe in 2007 on the worldwide money earners list for tournaments. A recently published a list of the top earners in ranking events from last year, which saw an impressive 7 UK players surpass the million dollar mark. The finance paper that published the report in question suggested that only 5 UK players had won over a million but on closer inspection, we found that 7 actually had.

PokerStars announced today the launching of the first Latin America Poker Tour, which will feature events in Central and South America. Three events have already been scheduled for the new LAPT, the first of which is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from May 3-5, 2008. Other events are already scheduled for Costa Rica and Uruguay.

For those of you that don’t know the story, a few years ago, Men “The Master” Nguyen and a bunch of the players he staked were in a hotel room together when the fire alarm went off. They were asked to leave the room while the fire was dealt with, and a suitcase full of tournament chips was discovered. This is a big no-no in tournament poker, so Men was asked to leave.

He was an intelligent poster on 2 2 who would later go on to make his presence known around the WSOP writing for Gutshot … respected for his ability to capture the underlying excitement of limit hold’em and math in action.
